Summary of Ross International intervention:
NHS Tayside and the Scottish Government Directorate of Health Delivery - Improvement & Support Team
We have trained several Rapid Improvement Event Facilitators in IST and two in NHS Tayside using a series of RIEs across various different areas of Tayside. The first was in Urology. A one stop shop for patients with worrying symptoms was quickly put into place and has been demonstrated to be sustainable. This event was the winner of the innovation award at the 2007 Health Awards.
NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde
We have carried out Rapid Improvement Events in the CT department of Glasgow Royal Infirmary and led an event in Yorkhill children’s hospital on improving patient/customer satisfaction while maximising scanner utilisation. The most recent event in Inverclyde increased patient throughput of day surgery cases with no additional resources.
NHS Grampian
We have carried out Kaizen/Rapid Improvement Events in Bank Nursing, Sterile Services, CT and a very busy Opthalmology ward.
NHS Lothian
The challenge was to prove Lean principles and Kaizen Blitz could work in a clinical environment in Scotland. A pilot process, assessing and fitting adult patients with hearing aids was selected. The key outcome is that audiologists are now able to spend the entire appointment time with their patient with everything they need, moulds, records, materials, equipment being to hand.
NHS National Services Scotland
The challenge was to gain acceptance of a new change methodology at a time of significant planned down sizing. A pilot process paying chemists was chosen & a team from all over Scotland was selected including a union representative. Large productivity gains were achieved as well as much less end of month stress and delighted customers who had 90% of their 'blue sky' wish list satisfied.
NHS Dumfries & Galloway
Rapid discharge from a ward was the focus of this Rapid Improvement Event. People from the whole chain (GPs, NHS ward staff, bed manager, consultant, pharmacy, physiotherapist, social worker, ambulance) were involved. Various tests of change have been carried out since and significant improvements have been made.
NHS Forth Valley
Maternity Services for women and children was the focus for one of the Forth Valley events. Their challenge was to make sure that the appropriate medical records were with the consultant and the patient every time. Various problems, including safe retrieval of notes from various storage points, were identified and overcome by the multi level, multi disciplinary team.
